MWANSA MWANSA
FOUNDER, DIRECTOR
Mwansa is a Winnipeg-based music educator and choir director, and the founder of Roots in Harmony. She grew a love for singing at a young age, with music remaining a constant in her life throughout the years to come.
Her musical life bridges classical training (B.Mus, University of Lethbridge), touring/performing, and musical theatre, shaped by listening to African music and learning Zambian folk songs at and early age from her father.
As a young girl raised in Southern Alberta, Mwansa found connection and belonging through choir during a time when she was still finding her place in the world. Those experiences and participating in those communities helped shape what choral music meant to her. Yet, at the same time, she began to notice how limited many choral spaces felt in reflecting the entirety of the people who were in them.
She started Roots in Harmony to build a choral space rooted in culture, meaningful belonging, and musical excellence. Through this, she brings Black music, storytelling, and artistic growth into the Manitoban choral sphere.
SONYA WILLIAMS
COLLABORATIVE PIANIST/ACCOMPANIST
Sonya Williams is the proud first generation daugter of Jamaican expats. Born and raised in Winnipeg, her deep love of music was born through family and faith.
Starting in the church with her family, Sonya has been singing and playing the piano since the age of four and throughout her school years. After earning two degrees in Arts Education with a choral focus, Sonya spent 18 years teaching life lessons to middle and high school students through choir and various arts.
Currently serving as a vice–principal in her Monday to Friday, Sonya is thrilled for the opportunity to share joy and music with her Roots crew.
