Roots in Harmony began with a simple but powerful vision: a choral space where Black music, identity, and community sit at the centre, not the margins. Founded in 2024 by music educator Mwansa Mwansa, the choir was born from a real gap in Winnipeg's choral scene, and a commitment to make sure Black music was celebrated, not just performed.

It started small: six friends in a living room. Now in our third season, that circle has grown many times over — from informal gatherings to a choir that produces its own concerts, including our most recent, Joy & Resilience, performs in community showcases across Winnipeg, and collaborates with local artists who share our commitment to Black musical traditions.

Our repertoire draws from gospel, spirituals, and contemporary choral music, sung with the kind of feeling those traditions were built to carry.

Roots in Harmony is a choir for BIPOC singers, a home for the people who carry these musical traditions forward.

As the group has grown, so has its ambition, shaped by the voices and experiences of the people who show up week after week, and by the artists we've had the privilege to create alongside. Today, Roots in Harmony is led by Mwansa alongside Sonya Williams, Collaborative Accompanist, and a growing team of section leaders who help bring each season to life.

Roots in Harmony is a proud member of the Manitoba Choral Association.
